I'm 24 weeks pregnant today & getting bigger and bigger!
First of all, I want to thank everyone again for all the wonderful name suggestions & ideas! We all have such different tastes in names- it's very interesting!
Well, I really didn't think it would be this hard to come up with a name for the kitten. Back when I was so sure the baby was a boy, I thought girls' names would be so much easier- but I was wrong!
I remember when we chose Sophie Lu's name- I knew it was the perfect name from the start, but I will admit that before we had her referral, there were a couple of moments when I thought... "Hmm maybe we should name her Annabella..." But my first instinct and my heart kept telling me "Sophie". I have to remind myself of that this time around, because when I get stuck on a name, I keep thinking that I will get sick of it- so I have to remember that I will only grow to love the name more once I associate it with Kitten's sweet face.
So I am facing a few challenges- one of them being the fact that I am not a mom in her 20's... Since I've been around so much longer than many younger moms, I've had more experiences with names, met more people, and had more friends (including blogger friends) choose names for their own kids. So there are lots of names that I associate with certain memories (some not so great) or other people- plus there are family & friends' baby names that are off limits. So that kind of narrows down the name pool to begin with! Also, there are certain pretty names that aren't so popular now but were very popular when I was young- so in my mind, they are just too popular (examples- Lisa, Ashley, and Kelley- all names I love but know a lot of them), but really they aren't- does that make sense? Sometimes I confuse myself these days!
Another challenge I face is how impressionable my mind is (even though I didn't think it would be)... For instance, I've always loved the name Lulu. But someone recently told me that it reminded them of a nickname for the bathroom in England, and another person told me (while circling their finger by their head) "Lulu- as in crazy, totally lulu?" It's hard for me to avoid these associations now!
But my biggest challenge is Miss Sophie Lu! She is very opinionated and even more picky than I am! Months ago, I mentioned a few names to her, and she quickly decided which name would be her baby sister's. After weeks of suggesting other names (because this name does have it's possible drawbacks for me), Sophie still insisted on this name. When I asked her why she likes it so much, she responded with, "Because that's her name, Mama!" And how could I argue with that? When I was a little girl, I saw this old movie- I wish I knew what that movie was. I think it may be have been a Shirley Temple movie, but I've googled it and can't find anything... Anyway, in this movie, there were babies and little children in Heaven looking down from their clouds to the earth... They were waiting to be born and wondering who their mommies and daddies would be. I don't remember what happened in the rest of the movie (does anyone know what movie this is?), but this scene has stayed with me all this time. I keep wondering, perhaps this is how things really are- little waiting souls in heaven. And maybe Sophie Lu somehow remembers being in Heaven with her baby sister while they were waiting to come to us? I know some people will think my pregnancy hormones are just wacky right now, but it's the way Sophie says it with such confidence, "That's her name, Mama!" It's like she knows! And I love the way this name sounds coming from Sophie Lu's sweet lips- it sounds so pretty. So here is Sophie revealing her favorite name:
So needless to say, our current first choice is Annalisa (which means "Graced by God"). I have loved this name ever since the day I first heard it years ago. The major drawback? Nicknames or shortened names- we would only want her to be called Annalisa. I know some people have said that she will inevitably be called Anna or Lisa (both pretty names) but if this is her name, we will plan to always correct them with "Annalisa". I do know it can be done as I have friends named Elizabeth and Christopher who never used shortened versions- and no one calls them anything else. Still, you never know.
Other names I like: Tiffany (means trinity), Sasha, Arabella (means answered prayer), Lulu, etc...
Of course there are many other names which I do like- but for some reason I just don't "feel" right for the kitten- examples are Ava, Pearl, Julia, Violette, Lili, Mirabelle, Louisa, Ariella, etc. And for some reason, I do feel like I want her name to be 3 or 4 syllables.
As for middle names, we are planning to give the kitten a Chinese middle name to honour her big sister. We want to do everything possible to give them extra opportunities to share something special (matching dresses for the 1st year, etc.). As of now, we are planning on the first part of her middle name to be Li or Mei (Annalisa Li, Sasha Li, Lulu Mei...).
It's still so fun to look through the comments & read the Baby Names books- because I do find names that appeal to me one day that hadn't before. I really am trying to keep an open mind- it's just so hard because Sophie Lu is pretty convinced! She does say that she likes Sasha and Lulu now also- but she always answers "Annalisa" when someone asks what her baby sister's name is. And like I said, who can argue with that? :)

When I had my daughter I named her Alexandra, and no matter how how hard I tried and corrected people, she was called Lexie...she is now 22 and she now corrects people and tells then her name is Alexandra...AnnaLisa is beautiful but unfortunatly your beautiful daughter will probably be correcting people all the time...I just love the name Sasha...
I love Annalisa! It is beautiful!!!
Maybe you and Sophie can work on.....we'll know the baby's real name when we first see and hold her...
That way you are not tied to it if you change your mind!! (And, I do believe that is true....babies reveal their names to us when they are born..though it is a good idea to have a few in mind to "help" the baby along!)
I'm with Sophie Lu! Annalisa is such a sweet and feminine name.
Dear Shana and Sophie,
I think the two of you have picked a very special and beautiful name for "the kitten". If everyone in your family calls her Annalisa, she will be known as Annalisa. What a beautiful name for a beautiful addition to your family! (I just love your name choice!) :)

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I just discovered your blog after find the enchanting videos of Sophie Lu on youtube. I recently saw some documentaries which mentioned Chinese adoption, and was entranced by all the 'gotcha' moments captured and posted on youtube - but yours stood out for the sheer emotion and happiness. I couldn't help but watch some of the other videos to see what happened next to your daughter. She is adorable and a credit to you. Having read some of your story I just wanted to say 'hi' and good luck with the latest addition to your familiy.
I often wonder what my own baby story will be, you have opened my eyes to the joy of adoption : )
Annalisa is very pretty. Our son's name is Patrick and we do not call him anything other than Patrick. My FIL called him Pat once and I said no his name is Patrick :)
Sophie Lu is so cute revealing her choice.
Well, I love that Sophie is helping pick out her sister's name, but I don't know if I actually love Annalisa. My friend named her daughter Annaclaire and EVERYONE calls her Anna. It frustrates her parents, but what can you do? My first pick is Sasha Mei. I think it's so beautiful and I ADORE that you will be using a Chinese middle name. That is so special. I also love Lulu, but Sophie's middle name is Lu. Hm... Keep thinking on it!
Claire
I love Sophie's choice!! Annalisa is such a pretty name! If you don't shorten it, I don't think others will. One of Sarah's favorite names is Annaliese! ;)
~Staci
Annalisa is beautifol and goes well w/ Sophie and Oliver.
My dtr is in 6th grade and has a classmate named Analeise - her name has never been truncated - it wouldn't occur to friends/teachers to call her Ana etc.
Best wishes
Nina
This is so funny. This happened with my brother too (I think it has something to do with being 3. They know what they want and aren't afraid to tell you. ;-)). My family went on vacation just before my mother found out she was pregnant with me and my brother made friends with a little girl called Rachel. He then said, "When I have a baby sister, I'm going to call her Rachel". My parents told him that if they had another baby, it could be a boy. He was having none of that though, which was made even worse by the fact that the doctor wouldn't commit to telling them the sex, so they couldn't prepare him in any way. They were worried that he would be upset if the baby (me) was a boy. Luckily they didn't have to deal with that!
I love the name Annalisa though. I wanted something with an -a ending for our daughter, because they sound really feminine and pretty but, in reality, our last name doesn't lend itself well to those names. I think Sophie is a smart girl and she's picked a winner. Good luck changing her mind. ;-)
Annalisa is more than perfect! I think that Sophie Lu is correct. Out of the mouths of babes. I would like to 'throw' in the name of Ting - which mean beautiful in Mandarian. You are awesome!

I'm an avid reader, but a lazy commenter, but I just had to put in my 2 cents.
I absolutely remember the movie you're talking about. I know it was a Shirley Temple movie, but I'm not sure of the title (I don't think it's "The Little Princess"). Anyway, that scene has always stuck with me too...it's just so sweet.
I love Sophie's choice of name. I, however, am partial to "Lili" since that's my daughter's name!! It's actually "Liliana" and part of her middle name is "Mei". (so I'm a little biased!)
Congratulations on yet another step on your family's journey. God's timing is just perfect, isn't it?
God Bless!
Shana-What a beautiful name!! Don't worry about shortening it, just introduce her to everyone as Annalisa and that is what she will be called. I have a close friend who has 2 girls named Catherine and Amanda and they are Catherine and Amanda, not Mandy and Cathy. No one has ever shortened the names because that is what they always called her.
Thanks for Sharing this with us!
Stacy J.
If you do go with Annalisa you will have to show her that video when she is old enough to appreciate it! It is a lovely name...I also love Lulu. And Julia, but I am biased because that is my name!
Annalisa is beautiful. I teach Kindergarten and I have never had an Annalisa in my class. I think that if you call her Annalisa, then that is what she will be called. Sure, you might have to correct a few people, but I think people are more aware of not using nicknames unless a parent does.
It is a beautiful name for a beautiful child.

At least she picked a name that actually works well on a human. I know a little boy her age who insists that his little brother-to-be is going to be named Nemo. As in the fish from the Disney movie. LOL.
Honestly, I wouldn't choose Annalisa just because Sophie is dead set on it. After all, she's three! She could decide next week that Dora is a great name because of Dora the Explorer. ;) If you really love Annalisa, then go for it, but if you aren't sure, then keep looking. You'll find the perfect name eventually. :)
Shana,
I think Annalisa is just beautiful
Love, Love, Love Annalisa! She will be called Annalisa when you tell her early that it's okay to correct people. Our Valerie corrects folks now (it only comes up occasionally). Before she was comfortable (she's more reserved) her brother, who is 18 months her junior, would correct folks for her.
I do love it....good luck finalizing!
Traci
Well just like you said it's going to be a difficult choice and one that is forever. Names our parents give us will stay with us forever and some parents unfortuately do not make very wise name choices. Kids can be brutal to other kids with names that may not be the norm or that are different from the common mainstream of names. As parents we can make or break years in school with bullies picking on our kids for having a differnt name. I love the name AnnaLisa, it's beautiful. I also love both of the names Lulu & Sasha but unfortunately I had a pet named Sasha and a friend with a pet named Lulu so I tend to think of a pets name when both of then names are mentioned. But also think of that weird guy with the curly hair Sasha Cohen which just ruins my thought all together of that name, but anyway good luck to you and just like one of the other bloggers said when you see her you will know it's the right name. I had a 3-d ultra sound done in my last trimester, which was the most beautiful things I have ever experienced. I could see my daughter, her lips, her nose, & her mouth. It was breath taking. Although it is not for everyone, some people do not want to see what the baby looks like until they come out but I could not wait. I knew from the moment I seen the 3-d video that her name was perfect for her. This ultra-sound gave me the opportunity to really be 100% certain that her name suit her and I did not have to ponder anymore and when she came out, it just fit. Ultrasounds can be addicting the more you have the more you want, it gives us a sense of security. My daughter is 6 mos now & I have never 2nd guessed or thought of another name.
Annalisa is BEAUTIFUL!!!
I love Sophie's name for her sister. I have a friend named Annalisa and she has always been that. Not Anna or Lisa
I love all your names. You will find the right one (and you may have it already).
We have our precious Annalyse and we call her "annalyse" and nobody has ever shortened it! We LOVE LOVE LOVE the name!!!
I love, love Annalisa. My SIL's cousin is named Annaleisa (same pronunciation) and everyone calls her by her full name and she is 40! I think you should name her whtever you like and Sophie will adjust once she holds her, but I agree with a previous commentor about Lulu and Sophie Lu being very similar. You will be forever confusing yourself! My mom gave us all names that started with a K and she did the roll call when she wanted one of us!
Keri
Maybe it could be Annalise, or do you really love the "a"? At least they would not call her lise! It's a lovely name either way. On my calendar this month one of the little girl's is named Annamei and she is darling! Not sure about Sophie Lu and Lulu. What does Michael like? Good luck!!
Hey Shana! I love Annalisa!! I think it's extra-special since it's Sophie's favorite!
I've googled and think the movie you're looking for is called, "The Blue Bird." Hope so!
Take care,
Julie
I love Annalisa - so pretty! Go Sophie! My daughters name is Elizabeth and no one calls her anything but Elizabeth - we have corrected some; Elizabeth is now 14 and if anyone shortens her name, she will politely say "you mean Elizabeth?" She tells us that she loves her name, loves that it is a classic and does not appreciate a shortened version. So I encourage you to go with gusto to those 3 and 4 syllable, condenseable names!
My youngest is Elisabeth (5). NEVER Liz or LIZZIE. Elisabeth, Beth, or Bella. SHE will not answer to anything but Beth, Bella or Elisabeth. I LOVE the name AnnaLisa.
I love the name Annalisa!
The Shirley Temple movie is, I think, called "The Blue Bird of Happiness." I loved that one when I was a kid. I remember the scene in heaven most! :-)
Annalisa and Arabella are both lovely. I lean more toward Arabella, since it is less commonly heard. I'll keep checking back to see what you decide. Blessings to you and your sweet family.
I just love hearing Sophie's little voice and think Annalisa sounds adorable. Of course it's hard to judge the first name without the entire name and I wouldn't want you to share that with all of us. I know your family will find a perfect name for the kitten. PLEASE just give her a normal spelling! That's coming from someone who's parents went with how her 9 year-old-sister wrote her name in a letter Sharie (no one EVER gets it right!)
Not crazy about Annalisa - how about Elise?
Nicknames are a funny thing, eh?
I love Annalisa, very pretty.
The name game is a tough one, at times. I wish you well.
I adore the name Annalisa! I don't think you will be able to convince Sophie otherwise...I agree with Sophie...Annalisa is beautiful, and fresh. I have a friend that her daughter is now grown and her name is Julianne and she was always Julianne. It was NEVER broken up. I think if you name her Annalisa and you always call her that, that is what she will be. You might have to correct a few people but I think it will not be a problem. It's a lovely name.
Kim
Finally!!! I have been waiting for this name post, as I am sure others have as well!
I LOVE the name Annalisa, its so BEAUTIFUL and I love how excited Sophie Lu is about it. I also love the fact that you are going to use a Chinese middle name, such a wonderful idea!
Good Luck!
Michelle - Canada
I like your ideas, especially the one about having her middle name honor her big sisters and making it a Chinese name. What a good idea.
Thanks for commenting on our Sophies blog. I hope you don't mind if I use your verse that you got from Kim on Sophies blog? It fits what we are going through right now and it is not often that I find verses that pull me like that one.
I am SO happy for you!!!
xoxo Michele
i like annalisa but it is a bit of a mouthful & people will tend to want to shorten it. maybe make it 3 syllables like annaleise or something? i wouldn't pick it just b/c your 3yr. loves it but b/c YOU love it too! i mean my 3.5yr. old INSISTED his sister would be named Amy Lee Pickles or Amy Lee Picklehead, LOL!!! even when we found out it was a boy!! ;) ;) ;)
then we talked about Jacob but decided to change the name mid-pregnancy. he still said no he is Jacob but eventually got used to the new name ;)
Tiffany makes me think of someone stuck-up or like Tiffany jewelry company. i like Annalisa WAY better than Tiffany ;)
p.s. i like Sasha! :)
Since my name is Lisa Ann, I think it's great that Sophie came up with Annalisa. :-)
what about annais? (anna ees), hard to nickname it
I love Annalisa too! Thanks for sharing it! We have ONE "Analisa" in our school and she has always been called her full name - never Anna OR Lisa. People are odd and will do what they want - but I see nothing wrong with correcting them. You would correct them if they called her Jane since it's not her name! With my son - he is JAKE, but there are two people (in the family no less) who repeatidly call him Jacob. There is nothing wrong with that name - but even at just three, he looks at them (without me modeling for him) and says, "My name is Jake, not Jacob!"
Good luck - your name choices are ALL beautiful - as we knew they would be :) I am curious - did ANYONE have Annalisa as a recommendation???
Annalisa is BEAUTIFUL !!
If Sophie Lu is anything like my g-daughter, she will NOT change her mind. My grand wanted a baby sister when she was 3 and was going to name her Sarah.
No friends or class mates are named Sarah, not sure where she got it, but she loved the name.
She is now 6 and still loves the name Sarah. AND now she also wants another little sister named Rachael !! My daughter has rheuamtoid arthritis and with the meds, can't have any more right now. She's 31, so still young enough to have more bio I suppose.
My point is, even though Sophie "is only 3", as some say, she may not change her mind on the day she meets Kitten.
By the way, Sophie Lu has birthday soon. I sat with my box of tissue needing to clean my eyes and happy tears seemed the best thing to do, so I looked at your old blogs, that's where I saw it.
Early Happy 4th Birthday Sophie Lu !!
If Sophie Lu says that her sister's name is Annalisa...It is Annalisa.
It's a very beautiful and femenine name....
Love,
Belén
Shana I think Annalisa!!! is perfect.
Hugs
María
My sister, Jennifer, was to be called Jennifer. Not Jenny, or Jen. At 3 yrs old she would correct people as to what her name is :-) because that is what she was called at home. It can work.
I LOVE the name Annalisa!! The story of baby souls in heaven may be more true than fiction. When I was pregnant and deciding on names my dad told me "God already knows her/his name" and He does.
Wonderful choice Sophie Lu.
in spain sacha is a boy´s name. Annalisa is beatiful.
kisses
PeaPea-
Annalisa is beautiful, and if that's what you like, do it, girl. I named Michael "Michael" and gave up on correcting other people.. *I* call him his name, and he introduces himself to people that way, and if others call him "Mike", well, that's their problem. Half the time I call him "Pookie" anyway! :)
In Chinese tradition, the father's dad gives the child her Chinese name. Maybe you can ask Felix for some thoughts on that, like what he'd like the name to mean, and then you coul find a chinese person to help you translate. And how bout a third middle name of Hispanic origins to honor Ollie? Then you could use Mirabella. Annalisa Meiling Mirabella R-------
is pretty. Not that Auntie Val is opinionated about this or anything. :) I love you bundles and we NEED to talk as things have been far more "exciting" here than I'd like. I'll email you the number as I can't find yours and you can't call the old one anymore as I've moved.
xoxoxo
Pea
Annalisa is a beautiful name. As for people shortening it, as long as you never shorten it, and always call her Annalisa no one else should either.
Same as when she starts school just let them know you do not want the name shortened. Although you may see her sweet beautiful face and totally change your mind :D
Annalisa is a great choice! It will be so cute for a little girl, and classic and elegant when she grows up! Plus, it fits in really well with Sophie and Oliver. I love it!
There is something so adorable about Lulu Mei. Annalisa is just romantic and delicate. Honestly, you cannot go wrong with either one.
I love the name Annalisa !!! Good choice Sophie!! What a sweet video! So is it Annalisa Jo? :-)
Heidy basically has decided that Eden is the name we are naming our next daughter. I love it so we will!!
Debbie
Annalisa is a beautiful name!
My daughter's name is Elizabeth, and I'm definitely keeping it "Elizabeth" and not shortening it.
I LOVE the name Annalisa! It is a bit uncommon, but still classic. Love it. One of my boys chose (insisted on) a name for his baby brother (our fourth boy), we did not name our son the name his big brother chose, and I have regretted it ever since! I SO wish we had! Anyway, I TOTALLY believe that babies watch their families from heaven (a teaching of my church, actually) Is that movie called "The Littlest Angel"? I love that you are giving the kitten a chinese middle name. We call Libby "Mei" or "Mei Mei" all the time. Everyone LOVES her middle name! Sophie is going to adjust beautifully to this baby... and I am sure Ollie will too. I personally think there is too much ado made about sibling rivalry. I think most children adjust beautifully to new babies. (Because, as you said... they remember each other from heaven... I am sure of it!)
I'm 99.9% sure the movie you're thinking of is The Bluebird. I remember watching it when I was young and on a Shirley Temple kick. It has parts both in color and in black and white I think.
Annalisa is a beautiful name and I love that you are going to give her a Chinese middle name to give her and Sophie an extra bond. What about Ollie though? Will he feel left out that his sisters share so many things that he doesn't share (and that they have each other and he doesn't have a brother)?
Take care,
Martha
Annalisa is beautiful. Sohpie did a great job with her pick!! Did that come up on the comments at all??
I think the movie is The Blue Bird from a search I did, hope that's right.
How are your neck/headaches??
Hi Martha,
Actually, Ollie does have a big brother (my sweet step-son away at college) & they are so cute together. We gave Ollie the middle name of "Michael" in part so that the two brothers would share a name. :)
Also, thanks to you and everyone else who mentioned "The Bluebird". I'm ordering it from Amazon today- but based on some recent info on the internet- I think you are all right! I'm so excited to watch it again!
Shana :)
If you wanted a "backup" nickname, to deter people from calling her Lisa or Anna, you could use Lili (from the third syllable of Annalisa), which I noticed is also on your list :)
I think the movie with Shirley Temple is called "The Blue Bird".
I too think you're going to have to reconcile the nickname issue. I have a daughter, Victoria, and we just knew that we would never let anyone call her Vicky (blech!) or Tori (double blech!) ~by the way: sorry if I'm offending anyone. I just personaly abhor those nicknames~
Anyway, someone recently pointed out to me, that one day my beautiful Victoria may grow up and PREFER to be called Vicky or Tori. For some reason, that never occured to me. "Yes, she will be her own person one day, won't she?"
Fionn, Good idea!
Thanks again to everyone who figured out that the movie I remember is "The Bluebird". I've ordered the DVD from Amazon & can't wait to see it again! The memory of the baby souls waiting in Heaven is extra special to me since I know in my heart that Sophie Lu & Ollie's souls were waiting to be born to us (with a little help of some Angel Birthmothers here on earth)...
Thanks again!
Shana :)
Annalisa is perfect! It really seems right, specially when you hear Sophie say it. Plus I think it will be nice for Sophie to feel that she "picked" the name for her baby sister. For a little kid, that's a big deal and it reinforces the fact that she is an important member of the family and that her opinions really count.
She is going to have so much fun with her baby sister!
Hi Shana,
I just wanted to comment that when I was in fourth grade my teacher simply decided to change my name from "Marisela" to "Marsi" because she said my name was just to difficult to pronounce. My parents didn't have a problem with it as long as I was ok with it too, since I was called "Mari" at home anyways. So in the end I am glad I never had to worry about correcting people. As an adult today, I can still identify myself with all three names & will introduce myself to new people depending on the circumstance, which is really a great thing. Your daughter may end up doing the same if you end up naming her Annalisa which is such a pretty name by the way.
Marsi
waiting for Madeline
I agree with Sophie, sounds to me like the baby is Annalisa :)
Do you think Sophie Lu could pick a name for our child as well? She did such a great job this time!
I know a little one named Lilliana. She is ALWAYS called Lilliana. It is never shortened. You can make her given name stick. All three of my kids go by there given names. So... good luck! Whatever name you choose, it will be the perfect name!
Annalisa is a Beautiful name!!!
Love it! Since Sophie Lu is so set on it, I think it would be hard to name the kitten anything else. Thanks for sharing your name ideas with us. Whatever name she ends up with will be perfect.
my younger sister's name is Bhreagh (pronounced br-ee-a) and everyone always say they love her name..it means beautiful in gaelic
but Analisa is also very pretty
I REALLY like Annalisa or AnnaLise. (lees at the end).
How would Anna -LEES be spelled anyways though?
:D
Okay people - I've seen a few people saying they don't like the name...or they like a different name better? Hel-lo! Really! Would you want someone to do that to you? Shana is sharing her journey with us....not posing the question "Do you like this name?"
"IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOMETHING NICE TO SAY THEN DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL"
Cait
Annalisa...very sweet name! And very fitting with the other kiddies' names!
Annalisa is a beautiful name. My daughter is Addison and we call her Addison. We did not shorten it to Addi. I have found that people will generally call your child what they hear the parents call their child. My son is Christopher and he was called Christopher when he was little. It was my son who shortened his name to Chris. When I was pregnant with my 4th son my boys had all kinds of opinions on names (one name being Skeletor). It made picking a name difficult. We finally all agreed on Tyler.
Shana,
I love the name its beautiful. I also agree with what you say about nicknames and how you have to be careful. I lOVE the name Tucker but well you can just imagine what the nickname would be for that name;)!!! Good Luck with that names!!!
Bobbie in Canada
I don't think I have ever posted on your blog before, but feel like I needed to after reading this post. I LOVE reading about your children, they are to precious for words. I understand how hard it is to name a child. 14yrs. ago I had my first child (didn't know what we where having). I got so tired of the names we had picked out and changed the girls name 1 week before we had her. We ended up with Macenzie Nichole. We fell in love with Macenzie and I always new I didn't want her name shortened either. Well, now in all of the sports she does her coaches call her Mac. I know sounds like a boy. She doesn't mind, but for me it will always be Macenzie. Also, I agree with Sophie Lu, Annalisa is a beautiful name.
I LOVE the name Annalisa!! Two of our children have "double names" (BellaRuth and Will Henry) and it has never been an issue. We have had to correct a few people, and now Bella Ruth corrects them herself :) I also have another good friend who has AnnieGeorgia and it hasn't been an issue for them either!!
Good luck!!
Beautiful name! You and Sophie Lu have done well! What about Annalisa Lulu?
Here is a link to "The Blue Bird" from YouTube. http://youtube.com/watch?v=D1nCWTSZP68
Your DD Sophie is going to love any name you choose....
Annalisa is a pretty name but a mouthful. It really seems like two names thrown together so it runs the risk of being shortened, unlike Christopher and Elizabeth, which sound like one name. Since you mentioned not loving a lot of syllables...and you and Sophie have two syllable first names, you may want to consider sticking with the same for DD #2...a thought: Elyse/Elise. It has the same feel as the ending of Annalisa, but is simple like Sophie. A one syllable middle name is always nice especially with the two syllable first so Elise Mei, Elise Cai, Elise Zhen, Elise Lin, Elise Li...had to throw in those great Chinese names. =)
Maybe a spanish FN, which then honors your DS....I grew up with a girl whose nn's were LULU & LULA; her given name was Lourdes("LOR-DES"). Other great Spanish names: Lucia, Luciana, Natalia, Paloma, Anabel, Maribel, Marisa, Marisela-(M names after DH)
Sasha is nice, but Shana, Sophie, & Sasha may be confusing.
Here is a great tool to find a Mandarin name based on meaning, birth year, date. etc:

O.K...can you tell I like Baby Names? Sorry, went a little too far....

Name suggestion:
HANA LI
We named our daughter Kaileigh. In the Irish Gaelic language it means celebration. You seem to like the ie sound at the end of names so maybe this would work. Whatever you name your kitten she will definately be a celebration.
I am just a lurker and have never commented before but I wanted to chime in on your name choice. It is absolutely GORGEOUS. I know your concern about people wanting to shorten it. My daughter's name is Mollianne and I cannot tell you how many times people call her Molly. She is now 5 and will actually very politely correct people that call her Molly. So, if you love the name, go for it and deal with the semantics later. Annalisa will eventually grow to correct people herself. I also love the Chinese middle name. Our daughter is Mollianne Grace Qiu - she was adopted in 2004 from China - and her second middle name was her given first name in China. We are currently waiting for daughter number 2 from China - Meisey Faith (Chinese name). We chose Meisey for the Chinese word for little sister - mei mei.
I love reading your blog and congratulations on your pregnancy!

have you thought of giving a guatamalan middle name instead to honor oliver?
I love all of your name choices. I love Annalisa but I love Arabella too. In fact, we are adopting our second daughter from China and naming her Lucy. I have had Lucy Arabella picked out for two years now. I just love that name.
Also, have you thought about the fact that if you named your daughter Sasha Li,you will be able to use anything you had monogrammed for Sophie. :)
My daughter is Mallory Adele. I did consider Meredith Audrey or Meredith Arabella for my second daughter. However, like your Sophie, my Mallory is dead set on Lucy and everytime someone mentions her baby sister she refers to her as "Lucy". I am sure whatever name you choose, it will be beautiful.
Ohhhh, I just read Fionn's idea. How sweet. Lili (like Leelee) would be such a cute little nickname for Annalisa. And, it's so similar to Lulu but even sweeter!!
I think Annalisa is beautiful. And I think it should stick because Sophie says so! She will be a great big sister.
Annalisa MeiLi would be an option.
I think the name will stick if you make an effort to correct people. My name is Mary Karen and I have always been Mary Karen. People make mistakes, I correct them and move on!
Also, I have a friend who's daughter's name is Juliajoy (one of the most beautiful names I have ever heard). My friend even had to correct me when I mistakenly said Julia a few times.
Annalisa is beautiful!
Shana, you still have some time to think about it.You will know in your heart what is the perfect name,it will stuck in your soul, and you won't have any doubts at all.I have found mine(I will put it on my blog),in one second I knew that is the right name.FATE
PS:I want ot see that movie"The blue bird"-I will try to find it:)
I think Annalisa is perfect! But then, my name is Lisa so maybe I'm biased! ;)
Shana,
Annalisa is beautiful!
Our youngest son was intent on the name Lucy when we first saw our little girl, and after going through MANY other names, I kept coming back to it because he loved it so much...he is so proud knowing that is her name. By the way...his name is Bennett, and that is what I wanted him to be called, and he always has. Although, when he started 5th grade this year, the teacher asked him what he would like to be called ??, and he said "Ben"...I guess it was about him showing his independence...everyone else (outside of classmates) still calls him Bennett.
I like the name Annalisa but prefer Analiese. If you go with Lulu maybe you could name her Lourdes and call her Lulu for short. That's the name I've been on now but I will never have my own. Another the name I want to throw out there is Juna Mei Pearl. Good luck, it's a hard choice when you have to name your child.
I like Analissa but Tiffany sounds better ;)
Rachel, yes- but since we gave Oliver the middle name of "Michael" to honor his connection with his daddy & also his big brother (Michael's bio son), we thought Sophie should share a name with her new sibing this time... :)
Annalisa is a beautiful name! Of course I may be prejudiced because my name is Lesa Ann. My daughter who is 10 has a girl in her class named Annalisa and that is what she is called, always! Beautiful choice:)
I have to say i LOVE the name. I have the same name and i get compliments on it every day.
When I was little, I was obsessed with dolls. I must have had dozens, and I cared for them as if they were real children. My favorite two were given to me by my mother. The first was a doll my mother had growing up. She was beautiful and had long flowing brown hair. On my mother's wedding day, my grandmother handmade a wedding dress for the doll to match my mother's wedding dress (which she also made). I treasured that doll. And her name was... Annalisa! Years later, my parents vacationed in Bermuda, and brought back the most gorgeous doll with tan skin and long blonde hair and a pale blue and white checked dress. Her name was Sasha. How I prized those beautiful dolls... the way you treasure your children! I love both names, so I had to share these memories with you.
Love, Brittany
Wow, Brittany! What beautiful memories, and what a coincidence. Those are my top two favorites right now! I'm especially glad you shared such a lovely story about "Sasha" since I've been hearing so much about Sasha Cohen & so many pets named Sasha. Now I have a pretty image to associate the name to! And hey, did you ever call your Annalisa doll "Anna" or "Lisa"? :)
I am a PE specialist so I see 1st -5th graders and I do see my partners kidnergarteners too when we teach teach.....That is around 590 students...
I just thought I would tell you that I have many children who have names that can be shortened but when they tell friends or other teachers that their name is "Annalisa" or Christopher for example then that is what people call them.
If kids don't mind or tell their friends/teachers to call them some thing else or a nickname then that is what they call them.....
So I guess from my experience I don't see children or other adults shortening names. Sure nicknames just happen naturally but most of the time it has to do with some thing or the last name....Not always the first name.
Just thought I would share that with you. Like you said if you tell people her name is Annalisa and correct them when they shorten it then they will no longer do that.
I remember you saying you are a teacher....Maybe you have had the same or different things happen.
:O) Michele
Hi, Shana! No, I always called Annalisa by her full name... never a nickname. For some reason, Annalisa sounded like one whole name to me... you know what I mean? Some names (like mine) people automatically shorten to a nickname. But Annalisa has such beautiful flow that to me, it would never seem right to shorten it. My son's name (as you know) is Grayson, and we worried people would call him "Gray," which I am not wild about. So the ONE time someone did, we just said, "Actually we prefer Grayson." And it was fine. People take their cues from you, so what YOU call the kitten, others will, too! I do love the name Sasha as well. I'll e-mail you a pic of the doll, if I can find one! Love, Brittany
That is so sweet, to think about Sophie and include her part of the naming.
Annalisa is a beautiful name...even sweeter that her big sister chose the name. What a wonderful idea to give the baby a Chinese middle name so the girls share a special bond. As someone who has a sister I can only say the bond between sisters truly a wonderful gift!
Karen
I think Annalisa is a beautiful name. If you want to reduce the risk of her being called Anna or Lisa, how about Annaliese which I have heard and seen spelled before. A little more elegant and the spelling may prevent what you are trying to avoid.
(Lisa here)
Sasha was my baby girl name's 2nd choice. But I wanted my all kids start with a same letter. “S” was not in my plan. I like Sasha very much. Sasha Li matches with Sophie Lu. In Chinese “Li” could mean beautiful or beneficial. Not bad meaning. Both of your children are so beautiful! Congratulations on your pregnancy! Take care.
How about Analise, or Analiese?
Funny, I've read off and on in the past but haven't commented before! This is one of those subjects I just can't help chiming in on. I have a bit of a name fetish and I must tell you, Sophie has picked a winner! I think it's really important for a name to "go with" their siblings names but not be matchy matchy. I think Annalisa strikes just that perfect balance of easy to see & say, hear & spell, not common but not unheard, and it sounds really nice with Sophie and Oliver.
We had a wonderful dog named Sasha, so for me I will always see Sasha a big black furry lovable creature. As for Tiffany, it just is about as far from Sophie and Oliver as you can get.
Annalisa is very pretty and I think you'd have a lot less trouble than you think with people shortening it. If you do decide you want to shorten it though, Annie Mei is adorable.
Shana,
I just love checking in here often and reading all your name comments. You are right...everyone certainly has their own taste and their own favorites....and wow...some REALLY strong opinions!! We are having fun dreaming up names for our second daughter...I have a little poll going...but honestly since we have such a long wait ahead, I will proabably change AGAIN (perhaps several times!). I have now promised my husband I wouldn't buy anymore monogrammed items until we get our referral!!
Annalisa is a beautiful name. Sophie has great taste! Since you are afraid the name may be shortened and you gave a French name to your first daughter, you could give your second daughter a French name too....such as Anelyse or Annelyse. It would be more difficult to shorten it. When I was a child (in France) I read several books entittled "The adventures of Sophie" I loved these books and spent many wonderful hours following that Sophie.I wish I could get them in English for my Chinese grandaughters. Now I read the adventures of your beautiful Sophie.

I too read your blog but have never commented so see how exciting name choosing can be? I love Annalisa it has a melodic sound. We had two boys Joel and Chad and with our girl we wanted e a more feminine sound so we named her Emalia and we all love it. Good luck and follow your heart.
Ohhhh she is so cute! I have to admit it would be pretty hard not to name the baby Annalisa.... Sophie is quite convincing. lol
The movie is the "Bluebird of Happiness" I think.
As for names. Annalise is a pretty name- but she may have to tell people not to call her Anna- as will most likely happen, especially at school.
I also have a friend who named her daughter MaryBeth- yup- you guessed it- a lot of folks just call her Mary. I am not one of them though.
I like the name Emelia (rather than Amelia)and Suzanne (Suzy).
Congrats and I'm sure the perfect name will show itself when you finally see your daughter.
Oh Shana,
I just adore you guys. I am so excited about the baby.
Hearing the name "Annabella" made me think of my favorite book when I was a little girl. The book was called "No flying in the house" and the main character's name was Annabel. Such a sweet story. After reading this book, I ran around forever trying to kiss my elbow (you would have to read the book to understand).
Best of luck. As always, you and your family are in our prayers.
Tracy
Sorry I am a little late with these suggestions. I love Teagan and Mahalia. Best Wish from Illinois,
Michelle
Annalisa is a beautiful name! I've also seen it spelled Anneliese.
Oh my goodness, this happened to me
12 years ago. My son Pacer[14] told me we had to name his baby AnaKay. Through her todler years everyone called her Annie even though it wasn't her name it was so cute, but now in 6th grade "Annie is so babyish how could you ever call me that" says AnaKay
Good Luck,
Ariella
Annalisa is very beautiful and I am with the others who have said that people will call her whatever YOU call her and whatever you tell them to call her.
Kim
I have a daughter whose name is one I did NOT want shortened, because the name is beautiful on its own. So, Olivia has always been Olivia, and she is now 12.
I loved the name Sophia when I was pregnant with my second daughter, but Olivia decided in utero that my Sophia would be "Sophie". So, Sophie it has now been for almost 10 years. She is so much a "Sophie", which is part of the reason I was first drawn to Sophie Lu's blog way back when she was about 18 months old.
Annalisa is a gorgeous name, and I am certain if you insist on its being said in its entirety you won't have a single quibble from anyone.
What a precious video of Miss Sophie Lu.

Shana,
I like your blogs. Who's the designer, or you design them yourself?
:) my blog needs a makeover ;)
Elizabeth
I think Annalisa is just perfect, because Sophie Lu chose it! :D The movie you were remembering, could it be this one? The Blue Bird?
Hope It's the right one!

Synopsis
Mytyl (Shirley Temple), the bratty daughter of a woodcutter, finds a unique bird in the Royal Forest and selfishly refuses to give it to her sick friend. That night she is visited in a dream by a fairy named Berylune who sends her and her brother Tytyl to search for the Blue Bird of Happiness. To accompany them, the fairy magically transforms their dog Tylo, cat Tylette (played by Gale Sondergaard), and lantern ("Light") (played by Helen Ericson) into human form. The children have a number of adventures including a visit with their (deceased) grandparents in the Land of the Past, a stay in The Land of Luxury, an attack by Old Man Oak (Zeus) with his angry trees and lightning which results in a forest fire, a meeting with Father Time, and, in the Land of Tomorrow, populated by unborn children, a meeting with Abraham Lincoln as a young boy (he prophesies "they will kill me"), and a meeting with their future sister. The scene in the Land of Tomorrow is an unusually somber one to find in a Shirley Temple film. The dream journey makes the previously unhappy and selfish Mytyl awake as a kinder and gentler girl who has learned to appreciate all the comforts and joys of her home and family. Much like MGM's The Wizard of Oz, the story starts in sepia and changes to Technicolor for the magical dream sequence
Sorry if this is a repeat, but there were too many replies for me to read.
The name of the movie is: "The Blue Bird" It's a 1940 film and is lovely! The part you described was my favorite as well!
Annalisa is beautiful! :o)
I love Sophie Lu´s choice!
Annalisa is such a beautiful name and has a great meaning too! But, I like it better when combining with the name: Mei.
Annalisa Mei! Sounds so lovely!
Thank you for sharing it.
I named my daughter Annalyse, pronounced Ahna-lise. We had worried that our midwestern parents wouldn't be able to pronounce it correctly and they did for a while call her Anna. At least they got the Ahna part right instead of Ehna! But after only hearing us call her Annalyse and my daughter herself correcting them when she was 2 years old ("Not Anna! Annalyse!"), they started calling her by her full name. I have gotten lots of compliments on her name so I would highly recommend it or a version of it. Just correct people when they call her something else and alwasy call her by her full name. Eventually, people will come to se her as Annalisa, not Anna or Lisa. I say go for it!
Annalisa is a beautiful name with an even more beautiful meaning.
I have a family nickname but my formal name, Bernadette, has an icky "obvious" nickname of Bernie. Yuck. No one calls me Bernie because I simply refused to accept it as a nickname from the time I was a child. No one has ever argued with me about it. I also have a cousin named Anthony - his name has never been shortened to Tony. He's always been Anthony.
So...you can definitely bet on Annalisa always being Annalisa - just make it so!
Glad to read that your pregnancy has been moving along well. Bedrest was not fun for me either but the end of the journey brought me my precious twins so it was all worth it. I know your little kitten will be worth it as well!
Annalisa is nice
I also like Sasha a lot!!
Tiffany not so much...
and my name is Lulu :P I think it's quite cute.
De-lurking to say that Annalisa is perfect and people will only shorten her name if you let them! They WILL get it, even if they have to be corrected multiple times :) P.S. My four week old daughter is named Sophie - I love it!

i love the sound of annalisa mei. so sweet... i think it's great that you're including a chinese name!
what about lisi (leesee) as a nickname for annalisa? it reminds me a bit of lulu, and would be a more unique nickname than anna or lisa...? even lili (leelee?) if you chose Li for her middle name...
just a thought... best of luck on your decision! :)
I've not read all of the comments, I'm sorry (it's 1.44am here in Australia). But I remember that movie, it was one of my favourites.
It's called The Bluebird. it's so sweet.
